The franchise is based on the Touken Ranbu video game and already has a few anime adaptations. The first TV anime Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru aired during the Fall of 2016 season. Studio Doga Kobo animated the series, which had 12 episodes. A sequel titled Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru came out in the Winter of 2018. Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu, which is connected to the upcoming movie, aired in the Summer 2017 season and was animated by ufotable. Crunchyroll streamed the anime. Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru movie trilogy is also in the works.

The plot is set in the year 1863. Japan is split. Pro-shogunate forces and anti-shogunate factions fight, as the era of the sword is coming to an end. Sword Warriors are a thing – spirits that live within swords. Horikawa Kunihiro manifests as a Sword Warrior and joins Izuminokami Kanesada after they met while serving the same master. Together they fight to survive and also to protect the world from historical revisionists, sent from the future to alter the course of history.

The franchise stems from a browser card game Touken Ranbu. The game launched in Japan in 2015, while a global release came in April of this year. In addition to the two anime adaptations, two stage-plays inspired by the franchise also exist, as well as a live-action movie and a spin-off game.
