The Boy and the Heron Reveals Film’s Second Visual Drawn by Hayao Miyazaki

The newest Studio Ghibli film The Boy and the Heron revealed a second visual drawn by Hayao Miyazaki, who also directed the movie. The first visual for The Boy and the Heron was released last year in December, while preview images of scenes from the Ghibli movie were officially released a month after it was released in theaters. The Boy and the Heron, also known as Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiruka in Japan. This is Miyazaki’s first movie since 2013 and was dubbed its last, although the director is apparently working on something new. The movie was released in Japan without any promotional videos and only a single visual.

According to the ComScore data included in The Hollywood Reporter‘s article, The Boy and the Heron earned 13.2 million dollars or 1.83 billion yen in Japan, and on IMAX screens, the film earned a record of $1.7 million US dollars in just the first three days. The English cast for the movie includes Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Dave Bautista, Robert Pattinson, Gemma Chan, Florence Pugh, and more high-profile names.

GKids, a North American distributor for Studio Ghibli films, licensed the movie, which will have its North American debut on December 8. Toshio Suzuki produced the film, Joe Hisaishi handled the creation of the film’s music, and Kenshin Yonzezu wrote the film’s theme song, “Spinning Globe.” The Boy and The Heron is inspired by a 1937 novel of the same Japanese name written by Genzoburo Yoshino. The film is summarized as:

A young boy named Mahito yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death, and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.
