CloverWorks Animation Producer Says My Dress-Up Darling Sequel Was Not Planned

Marin and Gojo have been confirmed to be getting a My Dress-Up Darling sequel, but an animation producer from CloverWorks mentioned that it wasn’t really planned. Shota Umehara wrote on Twitter that the main reason it’s happening is the huge support the anime received from its fans. You can check out his tweet below:

The tweet reads:
Congratulations on the announcement of the sequel to My Dress-Up Darling! Not that a second season had been planned, but this was due to the strength of the support from everyone who watched the anime and went crazy for it and bought merchandise and all kinds of products! This is crazy because it wasn’t in my plans, but as long as there are people who are happy to see it, I’ll do my best!

The original manga has been ongoing in the Young Gangan magazine since January 19, 2018. Square Enix Manga is also publishing the series in English as “My Dress-Up Darling” since April 14, 2020. It received a 13-episode anime adaptation by CloverWorks, which was voted as the best new anime of Winter 2022.  Crunchyroll is streaming it, and they describe the story:

Wakana Gojo is a high school boy who wants to become a kashirashi–a master craftsman who makes traditional Japanese Hina dolls. Though he’s gung-ho about the craft, he knows nothing about the latest trends, and has a hard time fitting in with his class. The popular kids–especially one girl, Marin Kitagawa–seem like they live in a completely different world. |

That all changes one day, when she shares an unexpected secret with him, and their completely different worlds collide.

Despite coming without being planned, the My Dress-Up Darling sequel already has many fans excited, and we’ll look forward to more details! In the meantime, you can keep an eye on another show from CloverWorks with Shota Umehara as the producer, Bocchi the Rock!
