Maruyama emphasizes that creating new works is about challenging oneself to do something different, rather than relying on past successes. He attributes this trait of being self-driven to his mentor, the late Osamu Tezuka, known as the “God of Manga”. Despite his concerns, Maruyama does not want to stifle directors’ creativity and prefers to support their talent rather than dictate their direction.

Maruyama co-founded Madhouse and founded MAPPA and Studio M2, playing a crucial role in launching the careers of celebrated anime creators such as Mamoru Hosoda and Satoshi Kon. With over 50 years of experience in the Japanese animation industry, his insights and opinions carry significant weight.
