The 52nd Japan Cartoonists Association Awards winners were announced on Monday by the Japan Cartoonists Association (JCA). The grand prize in the Comic division was awarded to Tatsuya Endō’s SPY x FAMILY manga, while Toshiko Nishida’s Fūshi Manga De Toku Onna Wo Matsu Barrier manga won in the Cartoon division. Hiromu Matsuo’s Magazine Rondo book won the new Manga division for its exceptional quality, which embodies the spirit of manga, yet does not belong to any particular genre. The grand prize for each division includes a gold plaque, medal, and 500,000 yen (about US$3,700) in prize money.

Additionally, the Manga Kingdom Tottori award was given to Akihito Tsukushi’s Made in Abyss manga, and the Manga Kingdom Tosa award was presented to Osamu Takeuchi’s self-published Vilange manga. The late Yuki Hijiri’s Locke the Superman received the MEXT award. These awards include a silver plaque (gold for MEXT), medal, and 200,000 yen (about US$1,600) in prize money.
Since 1972, the JCA has awarded the Japan Cartoonists Association Awards annually. Machiko Satonaka led this year’s selection committee, which included members such as Yoshihiro Ikegawa, Jun Ishiko, Naomi Kimura, Riki Kusaka, Yukio Shinohara, Kazuhiko Shimamoto, George Piroshki, Noriko Nagano, Akiko Nemoto, and Masato Hara.
Spy X Family
Spy x Family is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. The series was first published on Shueisha’s Manga Plus platform in March 2019 and has since been serialized in the Jump+ magazine. As of September 2021, ten tankōbon volumes have been released.
The story follows a spy named Twilight, who is assigned to infiltrate an elite school in a fictional country called Westalis, where he must get close to a young girl named Anya. To accomplish this, Twilight decides to adopt a telepathic girl and a deadly assassin as his daughter and wife, respectively, creating a family bond between them. However, the three family members are unaware of each other’s true identities.
